BIG thanks to Congressman John Conyers for calling in to tell mention the upcoming NAACP Conference and how he helped to bring Jazz music to Congress and legitimize it as an official American art form. We hope to be able to do the same with Hip Hop Music.

Perhaps here and now would be a good time and place to deliver my standpoint on tracks that feature lyrics that are abrasive or offensive in their content. Last night we played 3 tracks from D-Tour at the outset of the show in their entirety. Some of the lyrics on these tracks are "controversial." I do not agree with anything that perpetuates a negative attitude toward women, or any other person in general. Simply enough, it's just not good karma, and yes, I think a lot of rappers could knock that shit off. Every skill isn't a talent, but I like to think that the songs I play on Minced Meat exhibit some form of raw talent. Sometimes you can't have the best of both worlds (talent + content) and I'm not saying that nasty lyrics are "acceptable," but let's get current, eh? Recognize that 'gangster' rap holds a certain type of artistic merit that has been evolving and developing in many facets over the years and still, many rappers hold true to a street style of delivery and lyrical content to appeal to a certain taste that speaks to a particular lifestyle. Whether or not that lifestyle is legitimate is not up to me to decide, it's up to you. If Minced Meat can reach listeners with music they're into, maybe those same listeners will be into something new and different from their usual, and find it on CJAM. Often times, many of the messages that come through on these gangster rap tracks deserve careful listening (give it another turn on the deck) before passing judgement, as I would hope many people do with music they are concerned about, interested in, or simply enjoy. It's like what my English Lit professor Tom Dilworth once said: "If you read it once, you'll learn alot. If you read it again, you'll learn even more. If you read it again in 15 years, it's a completely different novel and will have an entirely different effect on you."

That said, Minced Meat and CJAM are a platform for local hip hop and electronic music and much, much more! Minced Meat, the title, hopes to encompass a wide range of music. It's about squashing all those sensational rap beefs that take away from the music (unnecessary drama!), as well as providing the listener with an array of new music coming from multiple outlets, styles, genres, sub genres, etc.

Any thoughts? Please comment! video

The Zone Radio w/ Origix & DC 7 Year Anniversary

From press release

Detroit’s Origix & DC have dominated the Michigan Hip Hop scene since April 20th of 2002 on the air waves of Henry Ford Community Colleges Non-Commercial Radio station, 89.3 WHFR.FM. The Zone Radio Show has made it possible for independent and signed artist to expose their music to listeners who have no means to hear Detroit Hip Hop on the FM dial. With the expansion of the internet in homes and on mobile devices, The Zone Radio has been ahead of the curve in broadcasting online, making it possible for people out of normal listening range to stream audio live with dedicated listeners around the world.

Origix & DC have been involved in the music scene in many different ways over the last 15 years from being fans and artists to booking and promoting shows. With great pride; The Zone Radio celebrates its 7 year anniversary, a platform they have built and networked from the ground up! This has been recognized by many fans of Hip Hop and media sources, winning them a 2007 MAEB (Michigan Association of Educational Broadcasters) award for Gold Microphone Air Check, Interview and Production Category’s as well as 2002 and 2003 Outstanding Support Awards by Detroitrap.com.

The Quest to spread music from the Midwest region is far from over. In December of 2007 Origix & DC launched www.2raw4fm.com, an outlet to broadcast online-pod cast’s and promote music from the region to expose music that can’t and will not be aired on the FM Airwaves. Origix says “We are doing everything in our power to take The Zone to the highest level, so we can play the music we believe in so much. If there are any stations willing to put us on larger airwaves they will not be disappointed with The Zone’s movement.”

Mark your calendars now:

I wanted to share these photos with you. My friend Baron took them. He has also contributed photography to an upcoming release on Detroit Underground, TBA. Watch for it!

Mayer Hawthorne @ Necto in Ann Arbor

Mayer Hawthorne, also known as Haircut, and 1/3 of Ann Arbor's Now On and fam to that whole A-Side Worldwide crew. I don't wanna miss this one! Since heading out to LA, signing to Stones Throw and performing live at SXSW, Mayer Hawthorne has graced Vanity Fair magazine, appealing to the soulful side of the fashion industry and impressing many with his one of a kind falsetto-crooner style.

Also performing alongside Mayer Hawthorne are the danceable electronic + hip hop stylings of Celsius Electronics here, a group coming up fast and having fun doing it. They've just released "Quantize" on iTunes. You can hear it on CJAM at midnight this Sunday if you don't want to cough up the .99 cents on your Visa. ;)

Ropes - Invincible ft. Tiombe Lockhart vs. MTVU

This was just premiered on Okayplayer. The third video release from Invincible's Shapeshifters LP engages topics of suicide and depression. Thanks to Invincible for having the courage and creative artistry to deliver this often ignored topic in a way that I think we can all relate to.

From the press release:
"After being accepted by mtvU, the station's standards department axed the video citing how its "suicidal undertones would be problematic" for a college audience. Ironically, Invincible and Tiombe's intention with the song is to speak openly and boldly about the prevalence of depression in our communities. With suicide being the third leading cause of death amongh 15-24 year-olds, "Ropes" aims to break the pattern of turning a blind eye to metal health issues, and to begin the process of healing.

"Ropes" was shot at Coney Island's Astroland on a cold, dreary and rainy day. Rumor has it that historic Astroland will soon be razed to the ground and developed into unaffordable lofts or condos, so this footage is visual preservation as well.

"Ropes" is written and performed by Invincible featuring Tiombe Lockhart. The video was directed by Mr. Complex. The song was produced by Knowledge. Thanks to Iqaa the Olivetone and Wes for their work on the intro."

Brzowski & Pour Man's Vision - 4/20 and 4/21!

Yes Yes Y'all, you can find Delusional recording artists Brzowski, Hazardous Wastes and Shane Blakemore (together as Pour Man's Vision) at Division Street Boutique on April 20th with RTKUL8, DJ 2040, Lordru and drummer Toma. Cover is mad cheap (if any) and its gonna be LIVE.

The following night, 4.21, in Windsor, lend an open ear to the caveman raps of Brzowski, HW & Shane Blakemore again with Lyrical Bliss (!!) and DJ 2040 for their first ever performance at the famed Phog Lounge.

You can also catch local favourites: Lordru's comin' over, while Blank Artists has just 'signed' the area's foremost trip hop artist Perilelle, and emcees from Academy will be on hand to give you exactly what you need.

This night will be a showcase of diverse lyricism and different mediums, from literary influences to gangster, modern hip hop, electronic, and throwback styles. Come on out and check it. Four dollars at the door, and I'll be there to greet you :)

Sunday April 19th on Minced Meat will showcase some live interviews and a performance from my good friend and co-conspirator on Harvesting the FAM Festival, Murad aka DJ ME aka WHY ME? on his 303 as he's opening up for another touring group, BEAST at Phog the following night. Gotta show love, my homeboy is certainly a talent on the rise.

Pete's Pipes will also be in the building with some free swag for ya, seeing as it's the post 4/20 party for some. Pete's Pipes is a friendly spot and great supporter of both local and touring artists, so come out and say high!!!

DJ Seoul + T.Linder + Minced Meat = Goodie Bag

I know it's short notice, but it's all in fun. Having just celebrated his b-day (I can't believe this guy is 10 years older than me!) Bill Stacy aka DJ Seoul and T.(Tom)Linder of Detroit Techno Militia and Bang Tech 12 will joing me this Sunday at 12AM on CJAM!

You can stream it live at www.cjam.ca or download it later by the hour from the MP3 Archives.

Seoul and Linder will bring their favourite hip hop and electronic tracks and will grace the turntables in their usual skilled fashion. I'll throw in some goodies as well, since it was my bday on Friday (I'm 25!)

The guys from DTM were actually some of the first musicians I interviewed on Minced Meat back in November of 07 when they released their s/t CD of DTM-produced techno tracks. It's an instantly classic though limited LP, and you can only get it in 3 parts here.

Don't forget to tune in!!

Seoul-full B-Day Celebrations

First off, I love the sound of this: what a great concept! Delicious pizza and great music every Thursday and Friday from 6pm - 10pm at TASTE "A Pizzabar Experience" located at 1431 Times Square in Detroit. DJ Seoul of DTM/Bangtech 12 and friends spin House and Dance Classics during dinner hours!

Thursday, April 2nd will see DJ Seoul, Jit Wiggins and T.Linder on the decks, while this Friday, April 3rd will be very special: for his official birthday celebration, Seoul will be taking up all three rooms of the venue alongside friends...
T.Linder
DJ Dru
Ben Wu
Sutter
Ronin Selecta
The Disciple
Neil V
Dan Lucas
Big Joe Hix
DJ Southside
Jit Wiggins
Jeremy Poling
and William Paul.

Check out Seoul's label/collective Bang Tech 12, which started out as a party/promotions company back in the late 90s.

You can also pick up Seoul's latest release, 2025 on DEX (Drugaci Exhibitions), a label based in Chicago.

And though I'll know better by tomorrow, there is speculation that DJ Seoul will be joining me on Minced Meat this Sunday as part of a dual b-day celebration, where we will play all our favourite tracks for you! Stay tuned!
