KEROHAND RECORDS - DAT ROIT EP

Just a few of Kero's toyz...
Click the blog title to get to the Vinyl France page and find DAT ROIT EP!! This BRAND NEW release came up really fast, originally scheduled for Feb. 3rd, but it's out now! Thanks to the work of Detroit/Atlanta's Kelli Hand (K-HAND) and Detroit Underground's KERO. K-HAND has run the label ACACIA for the last decade and is well known as Gorsch, on top of many other aliases (see a couple posts down for a few examples). This label has and will deliver techno, electro and I'm sure some IDM influenced dubstep, among other fusions. Whatever it is, expect all Detroit-based, innovative sounds from the Queen of electronic dance music and the King of mind-numbingly danceable idm. K-HAND has over 300 releases out on various labels that she started up, fused together or just contributed to, while Kero's published releases range from Bpitch Control to Warp, Touchin' Bass and Shitkatapult. Both K-HAND and Kero are excellent producers (seriously, the top), DJ's and remixers, to say the least, and have had their hands in the development of a variety of different electronic music genres, from Detroit to the World.

Join the facebook fan page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/K-HAND/57597163783?ref=ts and dig on her discography to see what I mean.

Here's some of Kero's, too: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Kero
Bonus, www.kero.fm has tracks you can listen to, just click around!

Mudgie's is Really Delicious

Last night Kero, Corbin Davis and I all went to Mudgie's Deli (owned by local electronic artist Greg Mudge). Located in the Corktown area, it was situated off-the-beaten path on Porter St. They specialize in creative and healthy sandwiches, soups, salads and home-cooked comfort food (in the evenings on weekdays and all day Saturdays).

I had the Ivey, since I'm a vegetarian (well, sometimes I eat fish...which makes me a "piscatarian" or something), and ingredients include complete freshness: Mudgie-made spinach spread (mmm garlicky!), alfalfa sprouts, havarti (which i sub'd for Pepperjack), romaine, tomato, avocado and shredded carrots, all on yummy, soft, multi-grain bread. Came with a little home-made "pickle" which really just tasted like a salt & vinegar mini-cucumber, it was delicious, and a slice of canteloupe. I'm getting hungry just thinking of it!

Kero had The Mudgie, which was stacked high with roast beef on an onion kaiser and had lots of yummy looking fixin's in there. I was too busy lookin' at my own huge sandwich to really notice anything but the beef, to be honest.

Corby had a selection from their "comfort food" menu, a hearty plate of Mudgie-made meatloaf with smashed potatoes (skin ON) and gravy.

The waitress there was super-sweet and brewed some fresh coffee (nice and strong, and gave me tons of cream, just how I like it) and the cook prepared everything exactly to our liking.

You may remember, a couple months ago having been there for Docile aka Andy Toth's record release party. Yep, that's right, Mudgie's is a "rave" spot AND a restaurant!

They serve Michigan's famous Faygo in glass bottles, and you can create your own sandwich with a list of ingredients (meats, veggies, condiments, breads, homemade stuff, whatever!) which makes this a choice place to eat for the pickier side of you. It's very reasonably priced as well! 3 of us ate and had drinks for about $30.00, tip not included.

And if that's not enough for you, Greg Mudge himself brought us out some of his delicious desert creations: Using a waffle-iron, he bakes brownies and cake-like things that remind you of your momma. We tried the Sweet Ruth and The Fudgie Brownie" (the menu is at their website, just click the title of this blog entry). Topped with warm caramel, ice cream AND whipped cream, it was incredibly delicious.

Afterwards we went to Corbin's apartment where I practiced my (still very weak) turntable skills, and Kero passed out on the couch, full bellied and satisfied, only to be woken up by Corbin & I laughin at his snores.

A sweet night all around thanks to Mudgie's and the Detund crew! xD

Rock, after all was born out of country music...

If anyone knows who made this track, please stand up!

KEROHAND Records

Kero (Detroit Underground) and Atlanta/Detroit label-maker/musician/producer Kelli Hand (some aliases include K-Hand, By Kely, Etat Solide, Gorsch, KMH) have gotten together to deliver more good music to the world via their NEW label, KEROHAND. Love the name!

Definetly two of Detroit's most innovative electronic music leaders, I'm excited to hear what they release from this new junction. The first release, Dat Roit EP, is scheduled for its debut February 3rd, 2009 and will feature pure "Detroit electro beats & soul". You can sample some of the tracks at the link below.

Buff1, Now On & 14KT Interviews

Photo: Buff1 by Public Media Group Photography

This week on Minced Meat I am happy to say I'll be speaking live on the air with some of the area's finest musicians, currently represented by LA/Ann Arbor label A-Side Worldwide.

They'll be calling in to the studio at about 12:30AM Eastern time to chat with me about their most recent and upcoming projects. Find out a little about A-Side Worldwide as well.

I know you're excited, so in the meantime, peep Now On's (Haircut aka Mayer Hawthorne, Jackson Perry, IX Lives) video, "The Willows" from their latest release on A-side Tomorrow Already:

A personal favourite, Tomorrow Already fuses R&B and rhymes with catchy melodic compositions. Featuring guests Aloe Blacc & Buff1, with production from The Lab Techs, Astronote & Jake One.

And here's the video for the title track from Buff1's Beat the Speakers Up EP, also featured on his latest full-length, There's Only One. The latter album, produced by The Lab Techs & Black Milk (did you get Tronic yet?) is receiving critical reviews across the board, making him a key figure in Detroit's hip-hop renaissance. For example... here's an interesting piece from Mark Abraham from earlier this summer: www.cokemachineglow.com/record_review/3871/buff1-theresonlyone-2008 and another one from artofrhyme.com: http://artofrhyme.com/reviews/Buff1_There's-Only-One/124/

Much respect to 14KT who won this year's Red Bull Big Tune Detroit accolades:
and has raised the bar with his LP The Golden Hour, a consistently solid instrumental album, a departure from his work with AML and The Lab Techs (but equally as fresh) and progressive with lots of shiny post-bump pressure beats. I think Buff1 refers to it as "electrosoul" and it's obvious why: KT takes sounds from early Detroit electro & blends it with Dilla-esque vibes, and some sweet discordant vocals that remind me of Georgia Anne Muldrow. THIS is what I mean by hip hop & electronica!

14KT, Buff1 & Now On are all on iTunes -- highly recommended for any hip hop fan who wants something that sounds fresh and represents whats going on HERE, musically.

What I heard at work all day today

I work at Mackenzie Hall Cultural Centre and today we were holding Royal Conservatory of Music exams. During the breaks between the tests, the adjudicator would practice this tune: Ravel's Jeux d'eau ( "Water Games" )

"IDM."

The Session (not) on Minced Meat

DJ 3PM/Skinny Larry and drummer T.Loyd won't be truckin' it all the way from South Bend, Indiana (i hoped the roads would be decent, but they're not) to record a demo for a show they're hoping to get at Notre Dame.

The Session( DJ 3PM & T.Loyd) are a multimedia fusion of both turntables and drums, and we had it set up so that they could broadcast a live performance from the production studio at CJAM. We'll have to reschedule to say the least, but having learned how to properly operate the sound and mixing boards along with recording gear in the basement there, I'll be able to host more live in-studio, on-air performances. Sound like fun? :)

Stay tuned...

"more great music to come"

Minced Meat Gets Fresher!

DJ K-FRESH will be gracing CJAM's turntables with me this SUNDAY JANUARY 11th at 12AM for a set of great hip hop, and maybe a few extra genrebending treats.

Heather and I (and a host of local heads & celebrities) heard him spinnin' last night at his weekly event at TV Bar, STOOPIDFRESH, with DJ Dez of SV fame (it was his b-day, a slippery one! happy bday DEz!) and they both layed it out and chopped it up beautifully for us.

Spread the word!

AND if you haven't made it out to TV Bar yet, go. It's comfy, stylish and full of great people that you want to dance with -- a great way to support local music.

On top of that, K-Fresh is the keeper of the most relevant blog/site to Detroit's Hip Hop network...

New Music, and a couple of shows to go to.

Tomorrow night! Phog Lounge, FAM Party! See you there :)
Houseshoes brings you the KING JAMES (Yancey) VERSION of the bible, it's an epic blend of music from Dilla's own record collection, and the music that inspired his production style. You can get the First Chapter at www.freshselects.net (see blogs I like).

I'm excited about this one: Zo! and Asylum 7 put together "Overdue Process" for your listening pleasure. Their deep musical history and unique talents combine to make this the first highly-anticipated underground hip hop album of 2009. Get it online January 6th, or today at www.tastefullicks.com

Two GREAT musicians and friends get together to show you whats up in terms of producing using fresh new gadgetry in innovative ways. Kero & Drumcell, ya just can't beat 'em! These guys do demos and lectures about new gear from Native Instruments to the Monome, Machinedrums, Torq, etc etc etc. For the tech-heads who like stimulating music.

A couple of fresh new nights to start the year off right!

AND don't forget about the monthly Blue Collar Gentlemen shows that USM, Boombox Entertainment, Havoc and crew put on each month. It's always at the Old Miami on Cass in the University district. This week, of course, with Asylum 7 (you can probably hear new music from his brand new album with Zo! see above) Ill Legit, DJ's Sleepy Biggs & Crate Digga +++. See www.myspace.com/usmdet, and thats whats up.
