As part of CJAM's Movement: Detroit Electronic Music Festival special programming, I conducted interviews with Juan Atkins, the ORIGINATOR of Detroit Techno, as well as Secrets, aka Matt Abbott, the reigning disco boogie house minimal/electro king here in Detroit.

Assorted Good Vol. 2 from Exchange Bureau Music
Just in time to see them rock the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Detroit's Best Digital Record Label Exchange Bureau Music has just dropped their latest long-awaited compilation, Assorted Goods Volume 2.
Assorted Good Volume 1, released last year, is also an impressive display of innovative-sounding beats, comprised of hip hop blended with electro, next to classic techno beats and jazz-infused house tracks.
Assorted Good #2 maintains EXB's reputation of being quality music pushers. EXB has become my favourite label as they correctly connect hip hop with all types of electronic music and continue to shape the sound of fresh new music from Detroit by pairing cherished, well-known artists with emerging new talent. Take Jeremy 'Ayro' Ellis, Jah Connery and Detroit Hip Hop Legend Phat Kat (1st Down, anyone?) together on "Unlike Any Other" for example. Jaw-dropping.
Another admirable quality about Exchange Bureau Music is that they always include great analog instrumentalists like local bassist Mark Szymanski and percussionist Jared Sykes in their releases. It adds that special element of rawness, that proves Detroit artists have skills that should be respected... even feared.
E.Spleece and Perilelle also work beautifully together on "We Can't See," a song with truthful lyrics complimented by a happy hybrid of straight-up techno beneath heartbreakingly pretty vocal melodies.
[By the way: You will be able to catch E.Spleece and Perilelle LIVE together on Wednesday, May 5th 2010 at Division Gallery, 1353 Division in Eastern Market, Detroit. They're playing with The Great Mundane, Aligning Minds and Kilowatts, with visuals from Kero as part of the Vantastic Telepor Tour!]
More moving, soulful R&B fused with house and hip hop comes from both Clara Hill and Monica Blaire on two different tracks, the latter having collaborated with Frankie Bank$ for a masterpiece of healthy hip hop-funk on "Raspberries." Remember when Monica Blaire visited Minced Meat before she packed the Detroit Film Theatre at the DIA? Epic! Click the link and find Monica's on-air acapella!
New artists on the EXB roster include Akira Shelton (check out this track Akira produced for Cold Men Young's Kopelli!) and The Doms (emcees Yoshi & Rells), who bring a sexy 80s throwback feel with their track "Whatever Tonight."
You can preview the tracks by clicking their names. Be sure to hit up Josh and Paul, creators of the Exchange Bureau label at info@exchangebureaumusic.com to let them know how their excellent collection of music makes you feel! Stop by www.exchangebureaumusic.com to listen to more music from the amazing artists on their roster and don't forget to tune in to Minced Meat on Sunday night from 12-2AM on CJAM to hear these amazing new tracks in full.
Peep the full track list for EXB's Assorted Good Volume 2 below, which also features bonus tracks from the John Arnold Quartet and thrillseeker Andy Toth, who also mastered the compilation.
And that's only the tip of this iceberg of an album.

Exchange Bureau will be in Miami at Sunny Side Up on Thursday Mar 25th at 12:00PM

Minced Meat - 11/9/08
So, I went away for a minute, sorry for not having a live show last week, (thanks to everyone who tuned in) even though I had planned for someone to fill in for me, and it was gonna be a sweet show.
To make up for it, tonight's show will be VERY EXTREMELY LIVE, with live performances from CFX and CORBIN DAVIS of BLANK CODE RECORDS.
Tune in to find out what gear they're using to create their music live for us, and join us in a discussion about technology and the evolution of the electronic musician's live set.
See links for a sample of the music from these Detroit techno veterans.
www.blankcode.com < Corbin Davis, CFX, Nick Bein + a host of local and international support.
www.myspace.com/project313recordings < Chad Parraghi + Nick Bein
www.myspace.com/djcorbindavis < Corbin
If you've ever been to a HEJ Records, VOLATL, DU, D-Records or Friction Detroit party, you've probably seen these guys.
Expect everything from hard to minimal techno, IDM, breakcore + glitch.
TONIGHT! 12am-2am on CJAM 9.15FM. www.cjam.ca to stream it live!
