Monica Blaire & Ro Spit x Burn Rubber 3 Year Anniversary

Two of the most polished artists in Detroit are performing on stage together to bring you The Renaissance State of Mind Experience. Starting at 6pm, Friday July 2nd in the alley behind St. Andrew's Hall, join Ro & MB for a friendly BBQ, followed by a stage show like no other in Detroit that blends hip-hop and R&B backed by a live band. Ro's raps and energetic, yet nonchalant demeanor combined with Monica Blaire's powerful voice and amazing personality will give you chills. Promise. If they don't, you probably don't have feelings. Just sayin'.
The theme of the night was inspired by Ro & MB's winning remake of Jay-Z's Renaissance State of Mind -- our boy DBIT re-created the beat from scratch for them. Talk about commercial appeal! The track can be found on Ro's "Oh SH#T! Project" which came out in late 2009. Download it at RoSpit.com.

Q&A + Mix from DJ TJ The King

DJ TJ THE KING has been gracing turntables since he was a kid. His love for good hip-hop and provocative, progressive minded music brought me to inquire, and the result is a series of quick answers to accompany the mix he made for Veg Selects, here. Catch him on the decks live at St. Andrew's Hall for the official concert of the 2010 Hip Hop Congress National Conference & Summit Saturday June 26, 2010.

MM: What made you first place your finger on the fader?

DJTJ: Ever since I was in the single digits my uncles have been calling me DJTJ and it stuck with me growing up. It's like it was meant to happen -- it's kind of crazy if you look at what people call you as a young child and it becomes a genuine reality.

MM: You occupy a pivotal place in the timeline of hip-hop music. Your work alone and with Jay Electronica is blazing a trail for independent artists. What's the best thing about being a hip-hop DJ in this current musical climate?

DJTJ: The best thing is that I get to express good hip hop music that will carry on for a lifetime and I don't have to work a 9 to 5 anymore.

MM: Do you think hip-hop as it's represented in mainstream media needs to change?

DJTJ: No, I think that the areas that aren't being heard need to step it up.

MM: What does it mean to be a tastemaker right now?

DJTJ: It means to have an opinion that is heard and matters.

MM: What do you listen for when you hear new music? What does it take for an artist to get on one of your mixtapes?

DJTJ: Any artist with good music can get on my mixtapes -- I don't discriminate. I listen to the combination of the lyrics, beat and delivery.

MM: What are you listening to right now?

DJTJ: I'm really feeling Danny Brown, Black Milk, MarvOne, Guilty Simpson of course Jay Elec. I think they have messages that the masses need to hear.

MM: What were you doing before you met Jay Electronica? What was your first show together like?

DJTJ: I was doing Grind Season Mixtapes right out of Greenfield Plaza. Our first show was rough because it was in front of a very big crowd for our first time together -- but after that, we golden.

MM: What do you want to do next? What's the next project you're working on?

DJTJ: I'm going to continue the Grind Season Mixtapes starting with artists from Detroit, then I'll start to hit other hoods in the nation that are simular to Detroit.

Doc Illingsworth says: "The name of the beat is "Not Really Fried" simply because I was about to name it "Fried" which in some parts is slang for being high (slang for slang lol) but I was "Well, I don't want people to think I was high when I wasn't really high" lol. Hir-O & Doss Present: Computer Blue

Doss The Artist rhymes over beats by Hir-O with additional production and contributions from Celcius Electronics' L05, Haz Bey, PJayD, Anomaly and more. This is a nice creative release with lots of street elements that pay homage to the sounds of Dungeon Family. Then they add in a bit of pop flavour -- these guys aren't shy about using autotune, but, they don't overuse it, either. They borrow a bit from Dilla on "Strongest Member of My Team" and remix FlyLo; they use toasty samples, reverb'd thuds and airy synths to maintain a warm, emotive vibe throughout.

$50 for 5 Elements Gallery

Hello all,

I'm writing today to tell you about the major changes that are going on at 5 Elements Gallery, Detroit's cherished venue for anything Hip Hop-related, and a major outlet for people seeking to become connected with Detroit's arts community in a broader sense. Sicari Ware and Piper Carter have been the proprietors of the Michigan Avenue location since 2008, and their motivation has always been to bring together the local community, while helping to develop a positive identity for Detroit artists.

Here is the press release for their "50 for 5E" which is going down May 15th at the Gallery, one of the last events to take place at the Michigan Avenue location, sponsored by emcee Invincible's Emergence Music. 5 E Gallery will continue to run, however, a new location is required. Someone has purchased the Michigan Ave. building, and the gallery's new spot needs a little sprucing up.

From Piper Carter: "Our event, $50 for 5 E, is only 2 weeks away! We sure could use help letting people know about it because while we have the venue & Detroit's Best Artists, we need supporters, & prospective bidders!

The event is the perfect occasion for Metro Detroit art lovers to come purchase a unique gift or collection item and support a worthwhile cause at the same time.

Another wonderfully amazing aspect to this event is that Phil Cooley (The owner of Slow's BBQ) has organized a community clean up on the same day from 9am-5pm. He has gathered 20 contractors to offer their services for free to help gut & clean & repair the new space."

The event features 50 Detroit Artists performing over 12 hours, and is a major fundraiser for the gallery's new venue.

Just in time to see them rock the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Detroit's Best Digital Record Label Exchange Bureau Music has just dropped their latest long-awaited compilation, Assorted Goods Volume 2.

Assorted Good Volume 1, released last year, is also an impressive display of innovative-sounding beats, comprised of hip hop blended with electro, next to classic techno beats and jazz-infused house tracks.

Assorted Good #2 maintains EXB's reputation of being quality music pushers. EXB has become my favourite label as they correctly connect hip hop with all types of electronic music and continue to shape the sound of fresh new music from Detroit by pairing cherished, well-known artists with emerging new talent. Take Jeremy 'Ayro' Ellis, Jah Connery and Detroit Hip Hop Legend Phat Kat (1st Down, anyone?) together on "Unlike Any Other" for example. Jaw-dropping.

Another admirable quality about Exchange Bureau Music is that they always include great analog instrumentalists like local bassist Mark Szymanski and percussionist Jared Sykes in their releases. It adds that special element of rawness, that proves Detroit artists have skills that should be respected... even feared.

E.Spleece and Perilelle also work beautifully together on "We Can't See," a song with truthful lyrics complimented by a happy hybrid of straight-up techno beneath heartbreakingly pretty vocal melodies.

No lie. I love it when artists put out great music. Music with authenticity, properly coordinated with lyrics, flow and style. Love it. This track "Totally Awesome" comes from Marv Won's newest release, Wayne Fontes. It came out just last month (see previous post) and it happens to be my favorite track from the album, which you can scoop at www.marvwon.bandcamp.com.

And hey, I guess Marv will be creating albums to be named after all of Detroit's great sports legends. So look out!
