Minced Meat Video Catch Up

Here are a few vids that crossed my path that I'd like to bring to your attention because, well, they deserve it (your attention). It's a bit of catch up. But here, all in one place, are some sweet effin' effects.

1. Progress Report - Wake Up

Props to director John, and D & Eddie, and the whole sleepin' crew (who are probably actually some of the most conscious people in the city). You guys made this video look sweet. Sounds great, too! Download the Spill Out Series Vol. 4 Progress Report EP on iTunes via sUPERIOR Belly. You won't be disappointed!

2. Danny Brown - The Nana Song (p. Mosel)

3. Danny Brown - Shootin' Moves (p. Frank Dukes)

Both vidz are from The Hybrid. I'm really impressed at the amount of acclaim and ampage this album has received. Brown and I had an awkward conversation about it when it first came out: he's really nonchalant about what I consider to be important music. (Hence awkward.) Have a listen.

4. Black Milk - Deadly Medley (from Album of The Year)

Oooh. Elzhi's verse gives me chills every time. *Shiver*

5. Inverted Wastelands - I like hip-hop as much as I like weird tekky art. Here's one from Carrie Gates (Saskatchewan) with music by Kero.

Read these details, carefully:
"Inverted Wasteland is a 10 minute live video performance piece by Saskatoon VJ Carrie Gates, with sound by KERO™. This work was made in response to an invitation to perform at an artist salon in Edmonton called "Future Worlds", organized by the MileZero Dance Company.

Audio:
track 1. KERO - Gramz - Cryovac records
track 2. KERO - Groovytour - Kerohand records
track 3. KERO - Ti Shlumpa - Ghostly International

Carrie plays up to 10 layers of video at once, using modul8 to manipulate the footage in reatime. All of the footage is custom shot and/or generated by Carrie. This video is a mixdown created after the live event (which is documented on Carrie Gates' YouTube channel).

6. Ghostly International: Matthew Dear recently released Black City: an album that transcends physical and auditory forms. Here's a trippy video abstraction that furthers this exploration.

7. More Ghostly via Christopher Willits: Flowers Into Stardust is the last track on the album Tiger Flower Circle Sun and the video is here, as created by Willits himself.

Reflection Eternal WSG Street Justice, Danny Brown, Mobil & More April 25 @ The Crofoot

Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek) are at the forefront of a powerful new version of Hip Hop music. To affirm this, catch them on stage April 25th with Detroit’s Danny Brown, Street Justice and Mobil for performances to satisfy all tastes, whether you’re a fan of late 90s backpacker wit, hard hitting street styles next to a cool vibe.

As a preview to their new approach and second full length Revolutions Per Minute, Reflection Eternal dropped the late 2009 single Just Begun. The lyrics magnify current social issues that attest to how Hi-Tek and Kweli evolve as stylistic innovators since their first release in 2000. With verses from current street savvy heavyweights J.Cole and Jay Electronica along with Mos Def, Just Begun appeals to new, young listeners using familiar sounds like looped horn samples from James Brown’s King Heroin. The song is a sample of what I think will be an injection of pop music's appeal into the intricate dialogue that Kweli has developed over the years with fans of his many projects, like Black Star with Mos Def, or Madlib on their collaborative Liberation.

Street Justice, known for appealing to both street and boom-bap palates, are gearing up to drop their upcoming releases Follow The Drip & GO H.A.A.M!, while Danny Brown’s latest release The Hybrid is also attracting a new heads yet repels any backpacker Hip Hop stigma. Though Mobil’s releases are few, his laid back attitude will help you ease into the intense atmosphere of this lineup. Mobil has just returned from NY where he and Danny Brown rocked live shows with their wizardly friend, Count Macula.
Em: If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?
Mobil: Tesla, Basquiat, and Kim Kardashian.
Em: What would you ask them?
Mobil: I’d ask Basquiat about his TWA Airlines story and let Tesla chill. Me and Kim wouldn’t be talking much…

Mobil will be onstage with Reflection Eternal Sunday, April 25th at the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, MI. Tickets are $20 in advance, doors at 8pm.
