Films + More

The Windsor International Film Festival is on now, with a great lineup of independent films. Tickets are selling out fast!!!
www.windsorfilmfestival.ca
I'm particularly interested in Sukiyaki Western Django. Guy Maddin is also in town, and his films are creating a lot of buzz.

Also, it just so happens that VJ Carrie Gates (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) homepage.usask.ca/~cdg118/home.html is in town, working with Kero (www.detroitunderground.net) on how to get Max MSP to read an EEG meter and change an image or video in front of you when your brainwaves switch focus. (To put it basically).
She also knows a little bit about nanobots and works at the University of Saskatoon. Check out Bricolodge, the 'experimental music net.label' that Carrie runs with partner Jon Vaughn. They have 20 releases for free download!! www.notype.com/bricolodge

Did anyone go to detroit docs?
I was in the US with Benn Jordan aka The Flashbulb. www.bennjordan.com, www.theflashbulb.net

I watched Day of the Dead (George Romero) for the first time last night and was quite impressed, horrified, appalled and amused.

ALSO: MEDIA CITY 15: International Film Festival of Experimental Film and Video Art has just put out the call for submissions. I worked for MC at last year's festival and met some really, really cool people and saw some of the most avant-garde/experimental/mind-fucky films recently created. Artists came from all over the world to showcase and discuss their works.
www.houseoftoast.ca/mediacity to find out more.
(Please contact me if you'd like to volunteer!!!!)

Don't forget to tune in to Minced Meat tonight!

Minced Meat - 11/9/08

So, I went away for a minute, sorry for not having a live show last week, (thanks to everyone who tuned in) even though I had planned for someone to fill in for me, and it was gonna be a sweet show.

To make up for it, tonight's show will be VERY EXTREMELY LIVE, with live performances from CFX and CORBIN DAVIS of BLANK CODE RECORDS.
Tune in to find out what gear they're using to create their music live for us, and join us in a discussion about technology and the evolution of the electronic musician's live set.

See links for a sample of the music from these Detroit techno veterans.

www.blankcode.com < Corbin Davis, CFX, Nick Bein + a host of local and international support.
www.myspace.com/project313recordings < Chad Parraghi + Nick Bein
www.myspace.com/djcorbindavis < Corbin

If you've ever been to a HEJ Records, VOLATL, DU, D-Records or Friction Detroit party, you've probably seen these guys.

Expect everything from hard to minimal techno, IDM, breakcore + glitch.

TONIGHT! 12am-2am on CJAM 9.15FM. www.cjam.ca to stream it live!

OBAMANATION!!! xD

Firstly, I must say: Congratulations to Barack Obama for winning the Presidential Election.

Among his many talents, he has the power to galvinize, unify, hearten and enlighten a LOT (millions, worldwide) of people.

Last night, I welled up with tears more than once (swallowing them back) as his acceptance speech put pride and hope on the faces of my peers. I learned of a few people's (valid, yet dissappointing) cynicism as well.

With all of the faith and hope that Mr. Obama has inspired, he would create a great wave of disappointment if his actions did not fulfill his words within his first or second term. At least now, even if Obama does nothing, he has delivered a an important message to Americans and World Citizens alike: a democratic system can work, so long as the people who have the power to ignite it are not so complacent or lazy that they let the opportunity pass by.

I was recently on tour with Benn Jordan aka The Flashbulb, who is a big supporter of the Obama Campaign and many of his hometown causes in Chicago, Illinois.
Benn and I talked at length about the benefits of electing Obama, and the struggles that he will encounter as being both the first African American President in history and the first democrat to win since Clinton.

Hopefully Obama will be able to reform America's health care system so that RX drugs and doctor's visits don't cost my American friends an arm and a leg. Hopefully Obama's new administration will figure out a way to prevent companies from needing to outsource for cheap labour and recognize the value of SKILLED labourers, facilitating a stronger economic environment to live in.

I could go on about this for a while. BUT I'm at work!

The best thing about last night was running into a fat stack of friends at Phog Lounge and listening to members of Another Saturday Knight playing along (drums & guitar) in the background to Obama's Acceptance Speech. Chad from ASK mic'd the speech which from an old fuzzy B&W TV at the end of the bar.

It was Epic. Have a listen.

I know I'm Canadian, but I live in a border city, and everything those Americans do affects us in Canada somehow. So, I'm glad Bush is getting out. THANK GOODNESS!

And thanks to all of my American Friends who voted! Whoever you voted for, you're proactive, and I appreciate it.

PEACE!
