Check out the new video from Ro Spit (also known as DJ Phrikshun of Subterraneous, aka Octane) and Detroit's Queen of Hip Hop, Monica Blaire. They've re-made the hit single "Empire State of Mind" from Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3 to fit the frame of the fine Motor City.
...Speaking of re-makes, Ro Spit aka Roland Coit's accolades go beyond just music. He was recently part of an ad contest held by Fortune Magazine designed to find an entrepeneur from the Detroit area that would help 're-brand' the City of Detroit, essentially sharing reasons why Detroit is an attractive urban destination for other entrepeneurs. His ad was all about making your own imprint on Detroit, a city that he refers to as a blank canvas. It's what's clever: Detroit truly is a mecca for innovative creativity, a perfect spot to try new things and stretch people's capacity for new and unordinary music, technology and ideas. Yeah he's from the 'Yac (Pontiac)... but it's Detroit that he represents, and he's doing a fine job of getting the national kind of attention that the city deserves, musically and otherwise.
Factoid: DBIT (Warp, Live Wire Records) of Rochester Hills recreated the entire beat from scratch for Ro & Monica's version. Original production credits go to Jay-Z & Co. but if it sounds familiar, it's because samples in the song are from "Love on a Two-Way Street" by The Moments and "The Breakthrough" by Isaac Hayes.
