Nick Speed on Minced Meat April 26th

Yep, Sunday April 26th, NICK SPEED will be on my radio show Minced Meat to discuss a variety of topics, namely his recent work in the local hip hop community and beyond, as well as the "current state of hip hop" and his increasing involvement in local electronic music as well.

Never heard of him? Some haven't, it's ok. You might be most familiar with his music if you've heard the albums Hot Soup w/ Danny Brown, or Creme De La Creme w/ iLLite. He's also produced for Talib Kweli, Eminem, and was in 9-2-5 Colony with Subterraneous Crew members Magestik Legend and iLLite, and later eLZhi, just to name a few of his projects. He has also worked with Model 500 and lately has been judging beat battles among some of the areas best producers. To say the least, he's a busy man as well as extremely gifted on the MP, just check out Streets of Detroit produced by Nick Speed, Nic Notion Smith made this excellent video.

Self Says What?!?

Hey everyone, it's been a long time comin' but I'm finally posting the link to one of the area's "most promising" MC's. Self Says aka Charles V. reminds me of a less-abrasive Doom: he's a great storyteller, and will contact the emotion in you. One of my favourites is Sleeping Beauty, check it out! He released this one in late oh-eight, and though short, it's definitely a refreshing listen.
Here's the link to the free download of Self Says' first solo EP "Something Out of Nothing."

Uprock and Invigorate

Heya folks! First off, a GREAT announcement from the CJAM execs:
CJAM has been granted PROTECTED STATUS from the CRTC at 99.1FM! We're officially a Class A Radio Station. That means, in the near(?) future, we'll be taking over the 99.1 frequency on the FM dial. That ALSO means that we'll be able to reach a wider American audience, finally extending our radio contours out to the Ann Arbor area, which almost doubles our listener base. The result will be more recognition for the locally-produced program's on CJAM, whose audience's are sure to grow! And, since the content of Minced Meat is informed by local music, that means more listeners will be hearing the amazing talents coming right out of Windsor/Detroit, which will hopefully turn into more people coming out to live shows and supporting the local music industry. Wow, the potential here is truly exciting! Which reminds me. Why don't you submit some tracks to Minced Meat? Email emilycopeland@hotmail.com or mincedmeat@cjam.ca.

Speaking of exciting, the 2009 Jammy Awards are coming up April 9th! Vote for Minced Meat as Best Special Interest Show on CJAM by clicking here. The show is categorized with the rest of the programs that focus the majority of their content on LOCAL music. Minced Meat is the only show that engages mainly local urban/electronic sounds, so hit that button! Thanks all!!

Remember....

...How I asked, "Who was the first electronic artist from Detroit to be signed to WARP Records?"

The answer is... to the best of my knowledge.... K-HAND! I did some discogs cross-referencing, and though K-Hand doesn't detail the Warp release on her own discography, it was the closest I could find. The WARP 55 album is called Global Warning and was released in 1994 under the original license of K-Hand's own Acacia Records which is based out of Detroit.

Though she has released work under multiple aliases and forged her own empire by creating and re-working a number of labels, Kelli is currently working closely with Kero of Detroit Undeground and releasing split EP's with the label KEROHAND. Love the name.

Next on that list is Jimmy Edgar, unless you count Richie Hawtin, who released "Train-Tracs" and "Dimension Intrusion" in 1993 under the moniker F.U.S.E., with Train-Tracs being an entirely ambient album that he put together with his brother Matthew. Though it's true that Richie took a lot of inspiration from Detroit, I wanted to be technically correct -- Richie was born in Windsor, while Kelli Hand is homegrown Detroit crop.

ProF: A Life Force

New Single from ProF | A Life Force
Released Tuesday March 17th

"As a member of renowned turntablist act iNSiDEaMiND, ProF (born Cheldon Paterson a.k.a dj Vision) is definitely no stranger to bending minds. With a well rooted background in vinyl manipulation, he brings a new flavour to the scratch. One part tactician, one part time traveler, this guy twists and turns up beats to unexpected depths with his melancholic samples and off-time tricks. This can be heard and felt in the production on his forth coming EP "Superorganism"...... Out this Summer with a special limited edition release on 5&1/4 records.

The first single "A Life Force" is now available as a free download exclusively on ProF's myspace page as well as 5&1/4 Records."

DEMF Lineup Announced

Part of it, anyway! I'm stoked to see local and worldly favourites Kero, Kevin Saunderson, Seoul & T.Linder play alongside artists like Bassnectar and RJD2, Afrika Bambaataa, and Flying Lotus! I hope they add Kode 9 & The Spaceape...
So here, the movement '09 lineup as published in The Detroit News.
So far...
• Adultnapper
• Ellen Allien
• Afrika Bambaataa
• Bad Boy Bill
• Bassnectar
• Benny Benassi
• Adam Beyer
• Steve Bug
• Marco Carola
• Carl Cox
• Carl Craig
• Dennis Ferrer
• Flying Lotus
• Buzz Goree
• Chloe Harris
• Damian Lazarus
• Derrick May
• Francois K
• Guy Gerber
• Heidi
• Kero
• Kevin Saunderson
• Loco Dice vs. Luciano
• Los Hermanos
• Luke Hess
• Mike Huckaby
• Onur Ozer
• Osunlade
• RJD2
• Seoul vs. Linder 2X4
• Tiefschwarz
• Tiga
• Rick Wade
• Wighnomy Bros.
• Z-Trip
I'm interested to see what RJD2 would bring to the stage: last time I saw him he was performing his handmade tracks with live instruments, if I recall correctly, he went from turntables to guitar to bass and even sax and back in one set. I think Live strumming would add contours to the dynamic of the festival this year... Here's the online forum discussion, as posted today on DLUV.

ST and AMRA on Minced Meat LIVE This Sunday!

That's right. I've mentioned it before, but I wanted to remind you again. Tune in for a special live electronic set from two guys who have been working super hard lately. They were recently featured in The Windsor Star!
Adam Rideout-Arkell (aka AMRA: keys, vocals, etc) is 1/3 of Yellow Wood, a Windsor fan favourite. Usually joined by his bro Matthew (drums etc) and R. Matthew Fields (bass etc), this Sunday at 12AM on CJAM, AMRA will be joined by Stefan (drummer of Michou) aka ST aka Efan! for a showcase of their fun-lovin electronicae, as transmitted through "ableton live with just a couple of midi controllers."

While you can usually catch Stefan beatboxing and playing his ukelele at Phog's Monday night Open Mic Surgery with Tara Watts, ST and AMRA first caught my attention at Phog's Freestyle Speech-Scoring event, where Tom had a bunch of local musicians who specialize in improvising come out to play their music live to famous speeches. Stefan and Adam sat down on the stage and emitted sounds slightly reminiscent of Boards of Canada, with punchier drums, wavering between crunchy hip hop, synthesized electro and ambient trip hop. They made an even deeper impression on me when they came in to do the same type of performance the night that Phog won Best Live Music Venue in Canada, where their set was even more compact. Totally fat-free ear candy. Yellow Wood's new album is one I am excited for: it's described as being more electronically influenced, which I think is a natural progression for this group of incredibly talented artists (release date TBA). It's currently being finished up: you can actually watch YWTV and witness the album's construction as it happens! Watch it at YW's Myspace. Check out Efan! while you're at it!

UPDATE: Tom from Phog wrote an article for the Windsor Star just yesterday, where he mentions Yellow Wood. Here it is!

Assorted Goods!

Exchange Bureau Records releases Assorted Good Vol.1, a delicious serving of some of the best music Detroit has to offer right now in terms of hip hop and electronicae. Download it at Exchange Bureau Music's Website. It features the official release of dial81's original Funky Candidate (box car portal, Superior Belly Records, 2008) and the remix by Furs. Catch dial81 at Gleaners Benefit Show on March 21st and Furs at Phog Lounge on March 20th! The comp also showcases previously unreleased music from Snowman Jack & Magestik Legend, Ibex and more. Szymanski and Perilelle, a classic combination, are featured on the release as well.

Hopefully you've heard already, but Perilelle has a new music video for her song Damages, directed by local filmmaker Sean McLeod. It'll be entering into the WAMM Online Music Video Contest: the winner will be announced in the next issue.

Catch Perilelle live at Phog on March 26th for the Smash The Glass musical showcase!

Speakin' of Shows,

Check out The Sponge, a brainy emcee! He's workin on some new stuff as well, with producer Decline. And check out the track Sincere did with Mobil while you're at it! Local Hip Hop, stand up!

Here's another event to try and make it out to, it's an exhibition showcasing 14 years of vinyl on record label Interdimensional Transmissions with SALVATORE PRINCIPATO of Liquid Liquid alongside BMG/Ectomorph. THE PAWN SHOP YEARS (1995 - 2009) goes from 10pm to midnight at the Bankle Building. There's some deep history behind this one, folks: records to be displayed include original releases by Ectomorph, Perspects, Alpha 606, I.B.M, I-f, Goudron and GD Luxxe and IT Compilation Artists DJ Godfather, Shake, Phoenicia, Synapse, Spacelings & Bassheads, Keith Tucker, Mike Paradinas (Mu-Ziq) and many more as well as remixers Adult., BMG, Kill Memory Crash +++.

As a special treat, here is the only music video ever commissioned by 99 Records, an independent record store in NYC that lived for the first four short years of the 80s and specialized in UK imports. Liquid Liquid, having released their first presses exclusively with 99 (nine nine) was an original post punk band that lasted from 1980-1983. The EP's have since been reissued by Mo Wax and Grand Royale, and remain seminal influences on the genre of electro, which is currently seeing an interesting reinvigoration, both locally and worldwide.

Check the facebook event if ya want, thanks to JoFuss for the info on this one!

Local Artists at SXSW: Music and Films!

Heya! Just wanted to let you all know about some of the hometown representation we're getting at SXSW happening March 18-22, 2009-- a highly concentrated, talent-saturated festival happening every year in Austin, Texas. It brings together folks from every spectrum: film and music as well as interactive workshops that help enhance the industry. Top-notch artists, both independent and major-label, from hip hop to punk, funk, indie rock, electronic/dance and more, from all over the world will be there.
So, much respect to Dante & D.Allie who'll be be holding it down strong for our area. They're touring, performing live at shows along the route to the festival, as well as at SXSW itself.
Here's the schedule.

Invincible and Finale will also be down in Texas, making a stop in Houston to perform at the Houston Palestine Film Festival, as well as show Invincible's newest "docu-music video" People Not Places. But first, March 14th will see them debut the video on home turf at the Ann Arbor-Palestine Film Festival. People Not Places is a single from Invincible's Shapeshifters, ft. Abeer and produced by Vaughan T of the Lab Techs and the mighty Athletic Mic League. You may remember her first documentary style music video Locusts which came out last year with the release of her debut solo album. We were lucky enough at CJAM to get to speak with her (big up to Josh Bryant, host of the Josh Bryant Show, for that great interview) and have her over in Windsor to perform at the NCRC last May.
The A-Side Worldwide Crew will be there as well, featuring the debut of CROWN ROYALE (DJ Rhettmatic of Beat Junkies and BUFF1!!!)

And.... Since i was on the topic of films, please check out this sweet monthly event dedicated to local filmmakers - The Mitten Movie Project! I went to check it out last Tuesday at Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak, what a great concept! I went over there with the intention of recruiting some filmmakers for both Media City 15 (May 20-23) as well as Harvesting the F.A.M. Festival (October 2, 3, 4) both will feature regional films of all types, genres and styles. Show us your films!!!

That's all for now... next up, MIX MASSACRE, Self Says EP download, Minced Meat Presents iNSiDEaMiND and mAGNOLIUS March 27th, and lots more!

ST and AMRA LIVE on Minced Meat Sunday March 22

Check it out, y'all!

Stefan of Michou and Adam of Yellow Wood will be joining me in 2 weeks at the CJAM on-air studio for a live broadcast of their new electronic work together, entitled ST and AMRA.

This is a sort of new experiment for the guys, who usually rock poetic in the form of indie-folk-acoustic sounds with live drums, synths and guitars.

On the show they'll be working with Ableton Live, an MPC and keyboards, generating live, improvisational electronic sounds with an 8-bit appeal. Should be fantastic and chill, be sure to tune in!

UPDATE: They're performing tonight (March 12) LIVE at Chubby Pickle in Windsor at about 9:30PM. CHECK 'EM OUT if you can make it!!

The Art Gallery of Windsor

...wants a bailout! And although they're "not mismanaged" nor are they terribly in debt, they need some more cash just to operate. What do you think? Here's the article:

"It won't be a pretty picture when the Art Gallery of Windsor comes beret in hand to a cash-strapped city council seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars to cover a shortfall blamed on the plummeting stock market.

Several councillors expressed unease Tuesday with providing direct loans to community or arts groups, especially in these dire economic times.

Others voiced concerns with the gallery's outreach efforts and its inability to secure funding from freeloading Essex County municipalities.

Even though he voted with the majority to bail out the Windsor Symphony Orchestra with a $300,000 loan, Coun. Percy Hatfield said the AGW faced a "harder sell" because it had assets it could hawk for operating cash or use to secure a bank loan.

"The art gallery has lots of art that's been in the vault for 10 years or more that's never seen the light of day," said Hatfield. "Maybe it's time to sell off a few pieces instead of coming to the city of Windsor. As sacrilegious as that may be, these are difficult times."

Gallery director Gilles Hebert bristled at the suggestion, saying any move to sell off the art collection -- which he called a "sacred trust" -- or trim gallery initiatives or hours could jeopardize nearly half a million dollars in sponsorships and grants.

"We've made all of the cuts that we possibly can at this point without compromising our status as an institution," said Hebert. "We're a public institution and we're looking for help from our local government."

The AGW faces a shortfall on a $2.2 million budget because anticipated revenues from a $6.8 million endowment fund -- which shed $900,000 in a tanking stock market last year -- did not materialize. Instead of $756,000, the gallery will receive only $221,000. It is prohibited, said Hebert, from raiding the principle to fund operating costs.

"It's not because we have a deficit and it's not because we're being mismanaged. We had two surpluses in 2007 and 2008," said Hebert. "It's because the revenue source that we depend on isn't there this year."

The AGW, which receives an annual $450,000 operating grant from Windsor taxpayers, has presented the city with two proposals. The first would see the grant upped to $600,000 and an interest free loan of $300,000. The second would see the grant remain the same and the loan increased to $450,000.

"That's a big chunk of money," said Coun. Jo-Anne Gignac, who opposed the symphony bailout. "I have a very difficult time with the city extending loans. I'm watching businesses close left and right."

Councillor Bill Marra also voted against the symphony loan -- and will oppose a gallery loan -- saying it created a "slippery slope and a dangerous precedent." He said the city should only guarantee loans so groups like the WSO can establish good credit.

"We've taken on the role of a financial institution by lending them money and I have a philosophical problem with that," he said.

Ward 3 Coun. Alan Halberstadt supported the symphony bailout and supports throwing a lifeline to the gallery.

"It's going to be difficult to say yes to one and no to the other because they're both cultural icons in Windsor and we're culturally challenged," he said.

Councillor Ken Lewenza Jr. opposed the symphony bailout to send a message that county municipalities needed to fund regional gems like the symphony, a sentiment shared by Gignac.

Councillors Dave Brister and Caroline Postma said the AGW needs to outline a plan to engage residents, especially young ones, as part of a business case that had better be convincing.

"A lot of people in my area see the art gallery as that glass house on the river," said Postma. "They don't feel it is accessible to them."

Hebert couldn't cite attendance figures for the gallery, which employs 30 people, but said they have risen "dramatically" since 2003. He added the gallery worked last year with 156 schools and other groups.

The gallery was good for the loan, stressed Hebert, because it had assets, including a $30-million building and a $60-million art collection. Those assets should be used as collateral for any city loan, said Coun. Drew Dilkens.

Hebert said the gallery was asking the city for a loan rather than a bank because it already owed an unspecified amount of money to a bank. He was vague when pressed for details, but said in a subsequent email the bank loan was a "very good news" story relating to attempts to "green" the art gallery and trim operating costs."

And here's my favourite comment, from my favourite non-profit gallery creator, curator, organizer, writer and poet, Gustave Morin:

"One of the reasons no one wants to live in windsor -- young people who grow up here vacate post-haste ALL THE TIME, have you noticed? -- has quite a lot to do with the fact that there is NO smart money here to sustain anyone's ideal lowest common denominator of a sustainable, healthy, happy "good life". (for 'smart money' read: money spent on arts, on culture, on the support and encouragement of those aspects of municipal life that not only make a city worth living in, but also a place where others might care to visit, or move to.) so, as long as the fractured but nonetheless committed and resilient creative class in this city is made to constantly squander its time and human resources in waging defensive ideological wars of attrition and propaganda against various of our policy-makers and those vocal, if unenlightened, members of our citizenry who continue to foolishly decry the arts, i see no possible reason why this brain-drain won't continue, effectively and irreversibly turning our city of roses into just another grey ghost town. windsor is at a turning point in this struggle, and it is time that we collectively realize that for there to be ANY life here, there must also be reasons FOR life to be here. one very good way to ensure this is to look after those resources we ALREADY have. the Art Gallery of Windsor is one such resource, and if we don't see to it that it gets the money it needs, it too will die a slow, ugly death. a few things everyone ought to know: 1) it takes 4 taxpayers to pony up one cent towards the arts in the city of windsor. in other words, each penny-wise, pound foolish taxpayer in windsor puts a quarter of a cent into the arts -- and altogether too many seem to think this is already too much? -- too much? how much do you think taxpayers in stratford put into their arts? in other words, you get what you pay for. (and, what's more, here in windsor, because we do the arts so well on a shoestring, you get plenty more into the bargain! this is WHAT HAS GONE UNRECOGNIZED!) and 2) if the city gave/granted the art gallery the 2 million a year that the above commentator has suggested, the federal/provincial government would be in a much better position to match those funds. the reality is that ottawa/toronto regards us as a bunch of jerks who, rather than investing in and protecting what we ought to be proud of, we seem instead intent on watching what our forebears put together fall apart. consequently, they've no interest in investing here as long as such goofy negativity remains the prevailing attitude. and if that's not food for thought today, i don't know what is. good day."

So, what do you think? Blank Artist's blog has a great post that integrates possible outcomes for our creative class. Check the Tasty Nuggets section above.

Last Night

Was way too much fun! United States of Mind's Album Release party at Elements Gallery (thanks Sicari!!!) was really relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable, despite a couple sound glitchz.

Stay tuned to Minced Meat to hear more from the USM crew.

I brought some friends from Windsor with me -- it was their first Detroit party! They LOVED it and can't wait for more. So, good work, Detroit, on impressing the ladies ;)

Haaha. But you know, my only complaint is that my hair and clothes stink so bad from all the smoke. I'm not use to that anymore! It always turns a mild hangover into a major one, and really does a number on my voice. I sound like I'm 50! Ah well, the price you gotta pay.. I just bought the 1.5L Fiji water to clear that up. And Gatorade. And 2 bananas.

See ya tonight!
